The Real Sarah Palin

Neil Cavuto interviewed Sarah Palin’s father Chuck Heath today and this writer trusts that his words give us a glimpse into the Sarah Palin the left hopes doesn’t exist — a smart, tough, workaholic who idolizes Ronald Reagan and has a tough skin that won’t be permeated by the likes of Gibson and Couric.

There are many examples of the integrity that Sarah Palin seems to value highly, but I will give just one since it is very powerful. How did the information “leak out” that a specific member of Palin’s administration had called her former public safety commissioner Walt Monegan to address the employment of the state trooper? That information, friends, came from Sarah Palin herself. As soon as she got wind of the conversation and a copy of the recording, she immediately released it to the press. Here’s the video of that press conference. That is the real Sarah Palin.

Sarah Palin has grit and determination. She has a basic foundation of core beliefs that she won’t stray from. I can’t count the times I’ve heard her use the words “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”. That is a mantra that she believes in. Of that, I am sure. I don’t care how little experience she has on foreign policy because I see in her something that is rare among elected officials and that is a tenacity in making sure conservative goals are achieved in government. I’m certain this is why McCain picked her and I believe it’s a side of her that much of the world has yet to see. I am hopeful that in the debate, the real Sarah will be made known to all.

Can't the left do better?

Oh, please, if this is all we have to worry about when it comes to the ethics of Sarah Palin, then I think we’ll do pretty well with her. Last month she was being criticized for fishing without a license and now for receiving a very public benefit from the local zoning officials. It’s also being aired that she received flowers from a welding supply store. (Gasp! What next?) Come now. Is this the best the news hounds can do?

I wonder what the average American taxpayer has to say about Palin’s receiving a zoning change, or flowers from a small business, as compared to, say, Biden’s $119.7 million in earmark requests in the last year alone. I guess the answer depends on whether or not that American taxpayer cares about consistency and facts. Sadly, too many do not.

It never ceases to amaze me how the left will hold forth in caricature minor missteps by Republicans while glossing over huge lapses in judgment on the part of Democrats. Biden says FDR came on television in 1929 and gets a pass. Palin says “I’ll get back to you on that” and we’re told the sky is falling. Liberal women decry the evils of the Palin candidacy, presumably because she is living proof that abortion is not what empowers women and moose hunters are deemed to be racist because, well, they hunt and field dress moose. At the end of the day, the left may end up with their preferred candidate as president, but if so, they will deserve every evil that comes their way as a result.

CBC Apologizes to Palin

It isn't often that members of the press apologize for errors in judgment, but in this case those errors were so pronounced and disturbing that the publisher could not refrain from doing the right thing. I am referring to CBC's apology to Sarah Palin for the recent column of Heather Mallick which raked Sarah Palin over the coals. One might wonder if Heather Mallick herself might issue an apology, but this writer thinks that is doubtful. If nothing else, Mallick should acknowledge that the CBC was no place for her to air her remarks and that she should have either kept them to herself or done it on her own internet domain. Still, it is gratifying to know that some in the business still value honesty in journalism. Thanks, CBC, for doing the right thing.

VP Candidates' Debate Prep

CNN reports that Sarah Palin is off to "debate camp" in Sedona. Please note, everyone, that Joe Biden is also having debate prep.

What lay in store for Palin? Only Joe Biden knows, but he has given some indications that he is going to attempt to bore deeply on big issues like health care rather than mention things like the sale of the governor's plane on eBay or the specifics on the Bridge to Nowhere. Decidedly, Palin has her work cut out for her. She is not well-versed on issues at the national level, but her tenacity and poise are forces to be reckoned with. Biden has much experience but horrible judgment while Palin has good judgment but little experience. It will be interesting to see the dynamics as these two candidates vie for points among the electorate.

Biden is expecting a lot of personal attacks/jabs from Palin, he says. I'm not so sure. Sarah Palin has more political savvy in her little finger than Biden has in his entire body. This is because she is no stranger to truth whereas Biden may have to spend time reconciling conflicting statements he's made over the years (i.e., "clean coal"). I think that Biden believes Sarah Palin will resort to personal attacks because he believes, wrongly, that she hasn't enough "ammo" when it comes to issues. We've heard from those who know her, over and over again, that Sarah Palin is a quick study. I believe she will be out for red meat come debate night.

To get a good idea of the skill Sarah Palin has as a debater, I recommend a viewing of her participation in the debate for the Alaska governor's race in 2006 which can be found here at the C-Span archive. The world still doesn't know Sarah Palin. Unfortunately, the loudest voices crying out about her are the ones who hate her. Debate night will be "the" defining moment. I trust conservatives and independents will not be let down.

Moose Hunters a Danger to Jews/Blacks?

With every passing day we see more and more reason to reject the notion that the Democratic party will continue to be a viable political organization for many more years. The latest spew of hate coming from their ranks poured forth from the mouth of Congressman Alcee Hastings (D-Fl.) who had the following to say about our beloved Sarah Palin (and all moose hunters):

“[A]nybody toting guns and stripping moose don’t care too much about what they do with Jews and blacks.” Source: FoxNews

Thankfully, not all Democrats abide by this sort of talk. Congressman Artur Davis denounced the remarks as a “great mistake”. It can be argued in depth, however, that Hastings’ tactic here – called race-baiting -- is the norm among Democrats, not the exception. Those in the Democratic camp use race baiting so often, one can’t help but believe it must be an integral part of the party’s handbook.

“As soon [as] anybody from the Clinton campaign opens their mouth in a way that could make it seem as if they were talking about race, it will be distorted. The spin will be put on it that they are talking about race. The Obama campaign is appealing to their base and their base is the African-American community. What they are trying to do is move voters from Clinton by distorting things. What have they got to lose?”
~~ Geraldine Ferraro commenting on the Obama campaign’s playing of the race card in the Democratic primary. Source: NY Times

“To me, as an African-American, I am frankly insulted that the Obama campaign would imply that we are so stupid that we would think Hillary and Bill Clinton, who have been deeply and emotionally involved in black issues since Barack Obama was doing something in the neighborhood — and I won’t say what he was doing, but he said it in the book — when they have been involved.”
~~ Robert L. Johnson, the founder of Black Entertainment Television. Source: NY Times
See also: For Democrats, Race Card Not the Trump It Used to Be, by Jack Kelly; Hillary's ad: debate footage doctored to make Obama blacker, Daily Kos.

I think it’s fairly safe to say that anyone who calls either of the Clintons a racist is race-baiting. Say what you will about their liberalism, they have never wavered in their defense of civil rights for African-Americans. Yet time and time again the race card was played by Obama surrogates in his struggle against Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination.

Comments like Hastings’ on moose hunters will, I predict, incite nothing more than a yawn from those who take the issue of race seriously except among those who are looking for a reason to be angry. I suspect the comment was delivered precisely for the latter. Appealing to the hatred within those who love to hate does nothing to heal the racial divide. It seeks instead to deepen it at a time when it is as insignificant as it has ever been, but I suspect that this is the point. When even moose hunters are said to be racist because they are moose hunters, something rotten is happening in America.

A Word from Mike

Mike Huckabee is none too happy about what has been going on in Washington. Here's an excerpt.

The idea of a government bailout in which we’d entrust $700 billion to one man without Congressional oversight or accountability is absurd. My party or not, that is insanity and I believe unconstitutional.

Read his entire message here.

Polling Update: Wed.night/Thurs.morn

Gallup polling for Thursday shows Obama with a three-point lead over McCain among registered voters. While Gallup should be credited for polling a large number of people (2,712 in this case), it should be noted that the poll included all registered voters and not just what is termed “likely voters”. Likely voters are those who say they will likely vote in the election, so their numbers are arguably more indicative of the clear picture than is a poll of registered voters. Secondly, it should be noted that this information is gathered from people nationwide, not merely the battleground states which will, in the end, decide this election.

Rasmussen’s polls show McCain with the edge in Virginia, New Hampshire, Ohio and Florida. Provided that McCain does carry those states along with the states Real Clear Politics shows him leading in……….and provided that Joe Biden’s comments on coal are advertised in Pennsylvania (thereby ensuring Republican victory there), McCain will have the election sewn up.

A Limerick for Mr. Gore

There once was a has-been named Al
Who was to the youngsters a pal.
He told them "Sit-in!"
"Those coal plants are sin!"
His word is their sole rationale.

Note to reader: If you really want to find out what's what in the energy world, try the website of the United States Department of Energy as a starting point..............not the lips of Al Gore.

Taxes Vs. Prosperity in Michigan

J. L. Boyle recently wrote this letter to the editor of Craine's Detroit Business on how the state of Michigan's higher gas tax has been a mistake that has brought hardship to the people of Michigan. I'm sharing this primarily to demonstrate to those who don't realize it that there are other taxes besides income taxes. These taxes can overburden the economy and, by attrition, average citizens.
Barack Obama promises tax relief for the middle class, universal health care and expansion of other government programs on a level that makes reasonable voters wonder where he is going to get the money. With the problems on Wall Street, I thought he might ease up on these promises, but I was mistaken. No, Obama still plans to provide even welfare for working people (yes, it is welfare) by putting an even greater tax burden on those who provide the jobs.

Democrats don't care if they destroy our economy as long as they can say they are out to "help the poor" because that is what gets them elected. By throwing more and more and more money at people who are struggling, they are effectively buying their votes but destroying all hope for a strong economy with jobs aplenty.

Boyle's letter about Michigan (linked again here) tells a deeper story about Democratic irresponsibility on fiscal matters. Let's pray the people will come to know this truth.

A problem that unmasks a deeper problem?

Mithal al-Alusi is causing quite a stir in Iraq.   An Iraqi Member of Parliament, al-Alusi is being prosecuted by his government for a crime punishable by death. That is, he visited Israel as a gesture of goodwill.

Consider for a moment that we are in the business of protecting Israel and of helping Iraq to build a peaceful and democratic nation, ostensibly one that will not attack Israel. With this action against al-Alusi, we find that it is not only too early to rest on our laurels in regard to a victory in Iraq, it may be much farther away than we realize. Indeed, one wonders if it will be possible even for our grandchildren to see such a day.

Sarah Palin gave some tough talk to Iranian president Ahmadinejad today, albeit on paper since she was disinvited from the venue where she had planned to speak. Her voice is one of many, both Democrat and Republican, speaking boldly in defense of Israel's proclaimed right to exist. Developments in the case of al-Alusi should give us pause and make us see that such words must be words of leadership. I have confidence in people like John McCain and Sarah Palin. They say what they mean and they mean what they say. I fear an Obama presidency because he is loose with his words, indecisive, wavering. I do not fear a McCain presidency. I will find comfort in having a leader in the Oval office with another leader at his side. I see now, though, that with leadership comes risk and, sometimes, hardship. A weak president will bring about more terror at home. A strong president may protect us at home, but bring more terror abroad because tough decisions must be made in the face of evil.

I pray for our country. I pray, as Sarah Palin does, that we are doing the will of God, whatever that may be. God, lead us, and give us leaders who will do the right thing.
